IS YOUR BRAIN LYING TO YOU? THE SCIENCE OF PERCEPTION
Explore cognitive neuroscience, evolutionary perception, and Buddhist psychology.
A primatology and mindfulness scholar breaks down the machinery of the human mind.
The evolution of the mammalian brain has resulted in mammals becoming the most dominant expression of life upon this planet, resulting in the current Cenozoic Era being known colloquially as "The Age of Mammals". That dominance is, in large part, the result of a unique evolutionary attribute shared amongst mammals that expedites perception and, in turn, cognition.
Perception that was further enhanced in Homo sapiens via the evolution of a cognitive mechanism that has been elaborated to unprecedented levels by our species.
And yet, for all of its evolutionary benefits, the refinement of human perception carries with it a sinister side that left unchecked can wreak havoc upon the human experience and human society.
In this talk, we will dissect the evolution of our perceptual processor, planting the prerequisite theoretical seeds that enable the empirical refinement of perception via mental-development (meditation), elevating human perception to its highest levels of cognitive proficiency.
Every Sip Smarter talk includes a 45-minute lecture followed by an open Q&A over drinks.
